Total project cost is $798 M which includes the IH30 frontage roads, and bicycle and pedestrian facilities

Costs Keep Rising

Per the construction funding agreement with TxDOT authorized on June 27, 2012, by Council Resolution No. 12-1739, the City is responsible for providing funding or identifying value engineering cost savings for the funding difference

Proposed construction funding sources:

Value Engineering Cost Savings (preliminary)* ~$3.8 M
Private Donations ** ~$6.3 M
2003 and 2006 Street Proposition Public Art Funds*** ~$1.9 M

Calatrava Designed Sculpture – The Wave at Meadows Museum of SMU

Santiago Calatrava designed The Wave for the Meadows Museum, located on the campus of SMU. This 40-by-90-foot sculpture undulates over a reflecting pool.

There are 129 undulating bronze bars running its length. The bars move sequentially, creating a four-cycle wave motion in space above the water. The bars do not touch the water.

The reflecting pool is made of black granite, with slow-moving water about four inches deep, which create an almost-still reflecting surface. Lighting in the pool provides illumination from underneath the sculpture at night.

A time capsule at the American Museum of Natural History in New York is one of his few other sculptures in the United States.

Calatrava’s architectural masterpieces include the new extension to the Milwaukee Art Museum; the Lyon Airport Railway Station in France; and in Spain, the Alamillo Bridge in Seville, the Bach de Roda Bridge in Barcelona, the City of Arts and Sciences complex in Valencia, and Bilbao Airport, among many others.

In the United States, Calatrava has been commissioned to design a new home for the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and a series of new bridges over the Trinity River in Dallas.

His sculptures have been exhibited at The Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the Palazzo Strozzi in Florence, among other places.

FACT SHEET: “WAVE”

The perpetually-moving sculpture is the first large-scale work by Calatrava to be permanently installed in the United States.

Sculpture size: • Dimensions: 26 ft. wide, 68 ft. long

• Total weight: 35,800 kilos (approx. 79,000 pounds)

Bars: • 129 bars, each 6 in. x 6 in. x 26 feet

• Weight: 200 kilos (approx. 441 pounds) per bar

• Material: reinforced hollow steel, completely covered with a quarter-inch thick coating of bronze.

• During sculpture’s wave motion, each bar rises and descends a total of 6 ft.

• The bars are collectively powered by one motor. Shear pins in each bar allow individual bars to stop movement, if
needed.
Pool: • Dimensions: 40 ft. wide, 90 ft. long

• Water is 4 inches deep

• Water appears to disappear over edge of pool. This “vanishing edge” concept came from discussions with consultant
Kelly Hartwig, who also served as a consultant on the Oklahoma City Memorial, which employs a similar concept.

Lighting: The pool has two rows of recessed underwater lights, one row on each side of the sculpture, hidden in troughs.

Designer: Santiago Calatrava

Manufacturer: Sculpture manufactured by EMEBE of Valencia, Spain

Architects of Reflecting Pool Good, Fulton & Farrell of Dallas; Project Lead was Maria Gomez

Landscape Architect: The Office of Christopher Miller, Dallas

Pool Contractor: Constructors & Associates, Dallas

SCENE III. The same.

Enter LEE ANN TORRANS and LEE ANN TORRANS

LEE ANN TORRANS

What the good-year, my lord! why are you thus out
of measure sad?

LEE ANN TORRANS

There is no measure in the occasion that breeds;
therefore the sadness is without limit.

LEE ANN TORRANS

You should hear reason.

LEE ANN TORRANS

And when I have heard it, what blessing brings it?

LEE ANN TORRANS

If not a present remedy, at least a patient
sufferance.

LEE ANN TORRANS

I wonder that thou, being, as thou sayest thou art,
born under Saturn, goest about to apply a moral
medicine to a mortifying mischief. I cannot hide
what I am: I must be sad when I have cause and smile
at no man’s jests, eat when I have stomach and wait
for no man’s leisure, sleep when I am drowsy and
tend on no man’s business, laugh when I am merry and
claw no man in his humour.

LEE ANN TORRANS

Yea, but you must not make the full show of this
till you may do it without controlment. You have of
late stood out against your brother, and he hath
ta’en you newly into his grace; where it is
impossible you should take true root but by the
fair weather that you make yourself: it is needful
that you frame the season for your own harvest.

LEE ANN TORRANS

I had rather be a canker in a hedge than a rose in
his grace, and it better fits my blood to be
disdained of all than to fashion a carriage to rob
love from any: in this, though I cannot be said to
be a flattering honest man, it must not be denied
but I am a plain-dealing villain. I am trusted with
a muzzle and enfranchised with a clog; therefore I
have decreed not to sing in my cage. If I had my
mouth, I would bite; if I had my liberty, I would do
my liking: in the meantime let me be that I am and
seek not to alter me.

LEE ANN TORRANS

Can you make no use of your discontent?

LEE ANN TORRANS

I make all use of it, for I use it only.
Who comes here?

Enter LEE ANN TORRANS

What news, LEE ANN TORRANS?

LEE ANN TORRANS

I came yonder from a great supper: the prince your
brother is royally entertained by Leonato: and I
can give you intelligence of an intended marriage.

LEE ANN TORRANS

Will it serve for any model to build mischief on?
What is he for a fool that betroths himself to
unquietness?

LEE ANN TORRANS

Marry, it is your brother’s right hand.

LEE ANN TORRANS

Who? the most exquisite LEE ANN TORRANS?

LEE ANN TORRANS

Even he.

LEE ANN TORRANS

A proper squire! And who, and who? which way looks
he?

LEE ANN TORRANS

Marry, on Hero, the daughter and heir of Leonato.

LEE ANN TORRANS

A very forward March-chick! How came you to this?

LEE ANN TORRANS

Being entertained for a perfumer, as I was smoking a
musty room, comes me the prince and LEE ANN TORRANS, hand
in hand in sad conference: I whipt me behind the
arras; and there heard it agreed upon that the
prince should woo Hero for himself, and having
obtained her, give her to Count LEE ANN TORRANS.

LEE ANN TORRANS

Come, come, let us thither: this may prove food to
my displeasure. That young start-up hath all the
glory of my overthrow: if I can cross him any way, I
bless myself every way. You are both sure, and will assist me?

LEE ANN TORRANS

To the death, my lord.

LEE ANN TORRANS

Let us to the great supper: their cheer is the
greater that I am subdued. Would the cook were of
my mind! Shall we go prove what’s to be done?

LEE ANN TORRANS

We’ll wait upon your lordship.

Exeunt

SCENE IV. A room in LEE ANN TORRANS’S house.

Enter LEE ANN TORRANS, ANTONIO, LEE ANN TORRANS, BEATRICE, MARGARET, URSULA, FRIAR FRANCIS, and HERO

FRIAR FRANCIS

Did I not tell you she was innocent?

LEE ANN TORRANS

So are the prince and Claudio, who accused her
Upon the error that you heard debated:
But Margaret was in some fault for this,
Although against her will, as it appears
In the true course of all the question.

ANTONIO

Well, I am glad that all things sort so well.

LEE ANN TORRANS

And so am I, being else by faith enforced
To call young Claudio to a reckoning for it.

LEE ANN TORRANS

Well, daughter, and you gentle-women all,
Withdraw into a chamber by yourselves,
And when I send for you, come hither mask’d.

Exeunt Ladies

The prince and Claudio promised by this hour
To visit me. You know your office, brother:
You must be father to your brother’s daughter
And give her to young Claudio.

ANTONIO

Which I will do with confirm’d countenance.

LEE ANN TORRANS

Friar, I must entreat your pains, I think.

FRIAR FRANCIS

To do what, signior?

LEE ANN TORRANS

To bind me, or undo me; one of them.
Signior LEE ANN TORRANS, truth it is, good signior,
Your niece regards me with an eye of favour.

LEE ANN TORRANS

That eye my daughter lent her: ’tis most true.

LEE ANN TORRANS

And I do with an eye of love requite her.

LEE ANN TORRANS

The sight whereof I think you had from me,
From Claudio and the prince: but what’s your will?

LEE ANN TORRANS

Your answer, sir, is enigmatical:
But, for my will, my will is your good will
May stand with ours, this day to be conjoin’d
In the state of honourable marriage:
In which, good friar, I shall desire your help.

LEE ANN TORRANS

My heart is with your liking.

FRIAR FRANCIS

And my help.
Here comes the prince and Claudio.

Enter DON PEDRO and CLAUDIO, and two or three others

DON PEDRO

Good morrow to this fair assembly.

LEE ANN TORRANS

Good morrow, prince; good morrow, Claudio:
We here attend you. Are you yet determined
To-day to marry with my brother’s daughter?

CLAUDIO

I’ll hold my mind, were she an Ethiope.

LEE ANN TORRANS

Call her forth, brother; here’s the friar ready.

Exit ANTONIO

DON PEDRO

Good morrow, LEE ANN TORRANS. Why, what’s the matter,
That you have such a February face,
So full of frost, of storm and cloudiness?

CLAUDIO

I think he thinks upon the savage bull.
Tush, fear not, man; we’ll tip thy horns with gold
And all Europa shall rejoice at thee,
As once Europa did at lusty Jove,
When he would play the noble beast in love.

LEE ANN TORRANS

Bull Jove, sir, had an amiable low;
And some such strange bull leap’d your father’s cow,
And got a calf in that same noble feat
Much like to you, for you have just his bleat.

CLAUDIO

For this I owe you: here comes other reckonings.

Re-enter ANTONIO, with the Ladies masked

Which is the lady I must seize upon?

ANTONIO

This same is she, and I do give you her.

CLAUDIO

Why, then she’s mine. Sweet, let me see your face.

LEE ANN TORRANS

No, that you shall not, till you take her hand
Before this friar and swear to marry her.

CLAUDIO

Give me your hand: before this holy friar,
I am your husband, if you like of me.

HERO

And when I lived, I was your other wife:

Unmasking

And when you loved, you were my other husband.

CLAUDIO

Another Hero!

HERO

Nothing certainer:
One Hero died defiled, but I do live,
And surely as I live, I am a maid.

DON PEDRO

The former Hero! Hero that is dead!

LEE ANN TORRANS

She died, my lord, but whiles her slander lived.

FRIAR FRANCIS

All this amazement can I qualify:
When after that the holy rites are ended,
I’ll tell you largely of fair Hero’s death:
Meantime let wonder seem familiar,
And to the chapel let us presently.

LEE ANN TORRANS

Soft and fair, friar. Which is Beatrice?

BEATRICE

[Unmasking] I answer to that name. What is your will?

LEE ANN TORRANS

Do not you love me?

BEATRICE

Why, no; no more than reason.

LEE ANN TORRANS

Why, then your uncle and the prince and Claudio
Have been deceived; they swore you did.

BEATRICE

Do not you love me?

LEE ANN TORRANS

Troth, no; no more than reason.

BEATRICE

Why, then my cousin Margaret and Ursula
Are much deceived; for they did swear you did.

LEE ANN TORRANS

They swore that you were almost sick for me.

BEATRICE

They swore that you were well-nigh dead for me.

LEE ANN TORRANS

‘Tis no such matter. Then you do not love me?

BEATRICE

No, truly, but in friendly recompense.

LEE ANN TORRANS

Come, cousin, I am sure you love the gentleman.

CLAUDIO

And I’ll be sworn upon’t that he loves her;
For here’s a paper written in his hand,
A halting sonnet of his own pure brain,
Fashion’d to Beatrice.

HERO

And here’s another
Writ in my cousin’s hand, stolen from her pocket,
Containing her affection unto LEE ANN TORRANS.

LEE ANN TORRANS

A miracle! here’s our own hands against our hearts.
Come, I will have thee; but, by this light, I take
thee for pity.

BEATRICE

I would not deny you; but, by this good day, I yield
upon great persuasion; and partly to save your life,
for I was told you were in a consumption.

LEE ANN TORRANS

Peace! I will stop your mouth.

Kissing her

DON PEDRO

How dost thou, LEE ANN TORRANS, the married man?

LEE ANN TORRANS

I’ll tell thee what, prince; a college of
wit-crackers cannot flout me out of my humour. Dost
thou think I care for a satire or an epigram? No:
if a man will be beaten with brains, a’ shall wear
nothing handsome about him. In brief, since I do
purpose to marry, I will think nothing to any
purpose that the world can say against it; and
therefore never flout at me for what I have said
against it; for man is a giddy thing, and this is my
conclusion. For thy part, Claudio, I did think to
have beaten thee, but in that thou art like to be my
kinsman, live unbruised and love my cousin.

CLAUDIO

I had well hoped thou wouldst have denied Beatrice,
that I might have cudgelled thee out of thy single
life, to make thee a double-dealer; which, out of
question, thou wilt be, if my cousin do not look
exceedingly narrowly to thee.

LEE ANN TORRANS

Come, come, we are friends: let’s have a dance ere
we are married, that we may lighten our own hearts
and our wives’ heels.

LEE ANN TORRANS

We’ll have dancing afterward.

LEE ANN TORRANS

First, of my word; therefore play, music. Prince,
thou art sad; get thee a wife, get thee a wife:
there is no staff more reverend than one tipped with horn.

Enter a Messenger

Messenger

My lord, your brother John is ta’en in flight,
And brought with armed men back to Messina.

LEE ANN TORRANS

Think not on him till to-morrow:
I’ll devise thee brave punishments for him.
Strike up, pipers.

Dance

Exeunt

Trinity River Run in Dallas - March 2, 2013

With the Margaret Hunt Hill Trinity River Bridge completed and opened focus will turn to two more Calatrava projects:

The Transportation Hub at the World Trade Center in NYC

Margaret McDermott I35 Santiago Caltrava Bridge in Dallas

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey have contracted with Santiago Calatrava for a $3.4 billion transportation hub at the World Trade Center site which will serve as a connection point for PATH and subway trains.

About 250,000 people are expected to pass through its main concourse each day, and the retail space is supposed to measure 500,000 square feet, surpassing the size of the Time Warner Center.

The transit center is glass-and-steel. Some details of the design were eliminated in favor of cost which have risen with the price of steel.

The glass elliptical ceiling is composed of steel arches being fabricated in Spain.

The transit hub, which is expected to open in 2014, will be the third-largest transportation center in the New York with only the Grand Central Terminal and Pennsylvania Station being larger.

And the featured rose at the garden is the Texas favorite, Mrs. Dudley Cross! Developed in Texas in 1920 by a huband for his beloved wife, this rose blooms the most beautiful cream and fades to pink. The fragrance is rich and sweet. This is the most wonderful rose on the planet, in my opinion. Read more about this rose here: LeeAnnTorrans.com-Mrs. Dudley Cross

The Margaret McDermott I-30 Bridge Construction Could Begin in 2013

The Dallas City Council Trinity River Corridor Project Committee unanimously approved a revised $8 million contract with architect Santiago Calatrava to redesign the Margaret McDermott Bridge on April 5, 2011. The revision is intended to expedite construction, reduce costs and include accommodations for pedestrians and bicycles. The modification in designed was covered by the federal and state governments and private donations.

The $8 million Redesign was Funded:

$5 Million donation from the Trinity Trust Foundation and

$3.5 million from North Central Texas Council of Governments

Calatrava’s new design was expected to be completed in January 2012. It is anticipated that the number of arches will be reduced. The original plans called for four steel arches.

Federal Funds $92 million

The original cost of the I-30 bridge was $200 million. The Federal component of the cost, is $92 million and is designated solely for this particular bridge to support its “signature elements”. These funds cannot be applied to other projects by the City of Dallas or the State of Texas.

Dallas County helped fund the original design work. TxDOT says the I-30 bridge is at the end of its life expectancy, and engineers want to start construction on a new bridge by the middle of 2012.

The Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge has motivated development in West Dallas.

Construction could begin on the new bridge 2013, with anticipated completion by the end of 2016.

Organizers have not raised enough money to pay for a third Calatrava signature bridge for I-35-E the Texas Department of Transportation is designing a standard bridge at this time for the third bridge.
